The U17s took on Lurgan Celtic for the second time in a week on Saturday but this time it was a Shield game. The Town knew Celtic would be looking to get revenge for the heavy defeat inflicted on them the previous week in the league.
It was Celtic that started the stronger and this basically set the tone for the majority of the game. Celtic pressed and were working at a high tempo which unsettled Lurgan Town therefore causing a lack of composure. The bulk off the goal scoring opportunities fell to Celtic in the half and they eventually took the lead half way through. Lurgan Town threatened occasionally with Tim Millen going the closest with a header from a Lewis McKinley corner. H-T 0-1
The first 15 minutes of the second half was similar and Celtic doubled their lead after a mistake by Jonny Russell and with Adam Craig rooted to his goal line seen the Celtic striker score. Lurgan Town then decided to play the last 20 minutes and with better finishing, a little luck plus some great saves from Celtic keeper they could’ve snatched something. Aaron Winters went close on 2 occasions, Tim Millen almost got a goal his performance would’ve deserved, Jack Evans was unlucky with a 20 yard shot that just flew past the post, Jonny Russell was on target with a half volley then Lewis McKinley somehow watched the Celtic keeper pull off a great save. In between all the Lurgan Town pressure Adam Craig pulled off a great save when one on one with the Celtic striker. F-T 0-2
There is a major lesson to be learnt for the Lurgan Town squad and that’s you need to start performing from the first whistle and not with twenty minutes left on the clock. Unlike the previous week when all the squad performed to a high level the only player that reached that level on Saturday was Mr Consistent Tim Millen plus it’s only a matter of time that he gets a goal from his new left wing back role.
