Lurgan Town U14 travelled to Warrenpoint to compete in the NIBFA cup on Saturday and played out an entertaining game despite being unfortunate to come away 4-3 losers. Town started very well and were in front inside a minute. A good ball into the box found Michael McConville and he headed home. The lead lasted only a few minutes as Warrenpoint struck back right away. The game ebbed and flowed with Town working hard but unfortunately went into the break 2-1 due to a poor offside decision.
After the restart Town pressed and were rewarded. Jamie Gillis’ shot was blocked by the arm of the Warrenpoint player in the box and the resulting penalty was scored by Ross Hawthorne. Again Town let their guard down and were behind when a looping header found the corner of the net. It was end to end, Town with several good chances, Niall Crilly pulling off and outstanding save. As they pressed Town wee caught on the break and went 4-2 down but did not lie down. Nathan Bell superbly lobbed the keeper to set up a tense finish with Warrenpoint under pressure.
Unfortunately they couldn’t get the equaliser but a very good performance from the boys which led the opposition manager to acknowledge the game could have been anybody’s.
