Lurgan Town U11 LL extended their unbeaten start to the season on Saturday 17 September after a hard fought victory over local rivals Portadown. Both teams created chances early on. As the game progressed space was at a premium and both teams traded possession in the midfield. Matthew Hughes was put through and brought a good save out of the Portadown keeper, while William Bleaks also shot just over the bar. On the occasions when Portadown broke through the Lurgan defence stood firm with strong tackling by both Josh Martin and Callum Carson.
The teams were evenly matched and neither had the luxury of being able to dwell on the ball. After sustained pressure by Portadown their number 7 brought a good save out of Dylan Alexander in the Lurgan goal.
In the second half early pressure by Lurgan resulted in a free kick taken by Christopher Heasley, but unfortunately the goal mouth scramble didn’t produce a goal. Some good interplay between Lukas Moles and Matthew Hughes resulted in a corner. From the cross Christopher Heasley placed a strong header past the keeper to score. Portadown upped their game and pressed for an equaliser but were unsuccessful. William Bleaks was busy on the wing and was always a threat but Lurgan weren’t able to extend their lead.
As full time approached Portadown began to play longer balls but were unable to produce clear cut chances. With almost the last kick of the match Lukas Moles supplied a good cross to Jessie Turner in the box and his firm shot went just wide. Lurgan can look forward to their next fixture with confidence.
