Lurgan Town Ladies couldn’t repeat the heroics of the last round of the Irish Cup when they defeated championship side Portadown as they went out of the cup away to Mid Ulster. Premier league side Mid Ulster in an away fixture was going to be a tough ask for the newly formed team but to their credit they matched the Premier League side until 52nd minute when NI International Sarah Connolly scored a fantastic goal giving Town keeper Emma McClements no chance. On 55 mins Brush and Gibson replaced Creaney and Potts. Mid Ulster added a second through U19 NI captain Rebekah Basset to kill the tie. Lisa Goodman came on with 20 mins to go for Fiona Welshman.
Manager Davy Welshman said “Tonight the girls stepped up and gave a fantastic account of themselves, the front three from Mid Ulster are all NI U19 players with Sarah Connolly also having played for the senior NI team, they also have the current senior NI keeper in Jackie Burns in goals so we knew it would be a battle. From front to back and the three subs who came on they all gave their all and left nothing on the pitch. We showed tonight we are heading in the right direction and next season we will aim to go further in the cup. We now concentrate on Wednesdays away game with Killyleagh as we head into match night 7 in the league. Our goal from the start of the season was to achieve promotion and we can take another step towards that if we can get three points on Wednesday. We wish Mid Ulster good luck in the next round of the cup and offer them our thanks for the good game and refreshments after the game”
